Waterproofing application with APP Membranes

The APP bitumen membrane, short for Atactic Polypropylene Membrane, is a special waterproofing material that is manufactured from Bitumen. They comes in rolls. Each roll measures 10 metres by 1 metre and covers an area of 8.7 m². With proper workmanship, the APP membrane is a very efficient and durable waterproofing material used in most constructions.

APP membrane can be applied for fresh roof slab, sunken slab, balconies, and basement.

Application method

APP Membranes applied as follows

  • Clean entries surface
  • Apply primer
  • Once the primer is completely dry, heat an stick APP membrane on the surface. Must provide an overlap of 10cm on both side.

APP membranes are not UV resistant. So a protective plastering or screading is must over the treated surface. Unless it is protected, membranes may de-bond from surface and water may enter in to sheet. This will cause the entire application get damaged

Cementious waterproofing coating

Acrylic polymer cementious coating is applied for fresh concrete. If the concret slab is old, then we need to remove all protective plastering and screading for applying such coating. This coating must be protected by protective plastering or screading. If protected, this will last for a long time. Cementious waterproofing have an elongation of about 180%. Bridge cracks updto 1mm

This method can be applied to new terrace/roof before plastering, bathrooms, balconies, etc.

Strutural waterproofing for new bathrooms

It is very important to waterproof bathrooms during its construction time. It is very difficult to arrest water seepage from an existing bathroom which is in use. The cost of wateproofing is very low if it is done at the time of construction. Remedial waterproofing for an existing bathroom is many times costlier and is a big burden. Structural waterproofing for a bathroom will cost less than 5% of the overall coat of a bathroom construction. So it is highly recommended to wateproofing the bathrooms during construction time only.

There are number of methods for wateproofing bathroom waterproofing. Commonly adopted adopted method is applying two coats of acrylic polymer compound. Waterproofing compounds are recommended.

Apart from acrylic polymer compound, we can use bitumen sheet (APP Membrane) for wateproofing floor area. For wall area we recommend acrylic polymer compound.

We need to provide a wateproofing coating for bathroom walls too at least one meter from floor level. About two meters from the floor level is recommended.

Apart from wateproofing, all pipe joints of a bathroom must be sealed with proper non shrink grouts.

Basement Waterproofing

The Basement and the Foundation are the places that require the most attention because water can cause major problems. Water can crawl into wall spaces and create a wet damp condition causing molds. This leads to unpleasant foul smell inside the building. If this issue is left unattended, water logging scenario. This can cause property damage inside basements and poses a great threat to the electrical systems which is commonly based in the lower levels. The lift mechanism system faces threat form this causing rusting and total failure. Overall, the whole infrastructure will fail due to these hazard conditions.

Two methods used in basement waterproofing is the Positive(application on the same side of hydro-static pressure) and the Negative(application on the opposite side of water pressure) waterproofing. Positive Waterproofing: In this method, the surrounding perimeters to the building structure is dug – about a meter deep(depends) and layers of waterproofing solution is applied (horizontal x1, vertical x1). This is the best suggested way to protect since the major cause of problem is water pressure from the outside during monsoons. Negative Waterproofing: This method must be used in extreme conditions when there is no other way of performing the task from the outside. Cautions must be taken that the materials used are not permeable and do not form honeycomb structures.
